Warp by Cloudflare review and features

Last updated: 2024-01-27 15:54:57

WARP by Cloudflare is a free service that allows users to increase their connection speed, protect themselves from possible online threats, and generally protect themselves and their IP address. WARP does not permit you to bypass blocking since it does not have a country selection function but only a connection and settings button.

Why does every user need a VPN? WARP is not a completely familiar VPN service, but even it performs the usual functions of a private tunnel, although not in the traditional form. When you connect to the service, you immediately hide your real IP address and details about your connection, your Internet provider stops seeing your actions, plus all your traffic is securely encrypted, which makes it very difficult for attackers to get to your data.

WARP by Cloudflare does not keep track of the actions of its users, so you can do whatever you want without fear, but it is worth remembering that this is not the best service that can protect you because there are VPNs with a more serious degree of protection and more functions. If you don’t have enough dedicated traffic in the free version, then nothing stops you from purchasing the paid version to get unlimited access to a secure Internet.

WARP by Cloudflare is a service that was developed by the hosting company Cloudflare, and from its reputation, it is clear that the service is good and can protect users. But there is a problem: This service balances between VPN and regular DNS, which does not allow you to protect users fully from threats and leaks of their data. Yes, this is a reasonable and necessary tool; in any case, it will not protect you at the proper level when downloading torrents, and even more so, it does not allow you to select the location for connection. Let`s see what WARP is made of:

  1. Access to safer internet.

  2. Free service.

  3. Paid service with unlimited bandwidth.

  4. Massive network with 100+ countries.

  5. Desktop and mobile availability.

  6. Zero-Log Policy.

  7. Private DNS servers.

WARP by Cloudflare doesn`t offer the most popular features, but it has a few:

  • Strong encryption
The service does not disclose how it encrypts data, but it does it, and you can trust it.
  • Reliability
Cloudflare is a trusted company that doesn`t see any point in selling your data. At a minimum, the company does not collect them.
  • BoringTun protocol designed on WIreGuard
A protocol based on WireGuard, which is not super high-tech but still provides the speed and necessary protection.
  • Split Tunneling
Select which addresses will be allowed for use with WARP and which will be denied.
  • No Kill Switch
WARP does not offer a Kill Switch feature, which is very unfortunate and can cause data leaks.
  • IP and DNS Leak protection
Your data is securely protected, and no service can find your location.
Max devices per licence 100
Traffic LIMITED
No-log policy (VPN doesnt keep logs) YES
Kill switch support NO
AdBlock NO
IP Shuffle NO
Split tunneling NO

The connection speed when connecting to WARP proved to be quite unstable and varied significantly between the three results. Looking at these speeds, it becomes clear that, in general, they will be enough for standard Internet activities such as surfing or watching videos on YouTube, but for gaming activities, we would not recommend the service since the speed jumps, and you will feel apparent lags during game time, which will significantly affect your gaming results.

As for other servers in other countries, the WARP application does not allow you to select a server and bypass blocking, which means you will be automatically connected to the server that is located in your country. Because of this, we did not have the opportunity to test what WARP is capable of, for example, in Germany or the USA. Still, we wonder if the results will differ from what we saw in the example of a couple of servers located in Athens.

The starting point for our tests will be ThessalonikiGreece.
A service called Speedtest will help us with this.

Quick reminders:
Ping — time in ms required to transfer data from you to the server. — Lower is better, higher is worse.
Download — speed of downloading data from (!) the Internet. — Lower is worse, higher is better.
Upload — speed of data upload to (!) the Internet. — Lower is worse, higher is better.

Thessaloniki, Greece - No WARP

Athens, Greece, WARP enabled - First test

Athens, Greece, WARP enabled - Second test

Athens, Greece, WARP enabled - Third test

Warp by Cloudflare does not have a huge server network in its arsenal but 300 servers in 100 countries. This allows you to provide a secure connection in more than 100 countries in the world because people who are beyond the reach of WARP will be connected to the nearest country. For many people, this will not help bypass some blocking and restrictions but is a simple way to protect yourself and increase your connection speed, which is why we are not talking about the fact that the service provides such an opportunity.

WARP by Cloudflare does not collect IP addresses or detailed information about its users and openly states this. Cloudflare`s reputation is very high, so the service will not spoil it for any minor reasons. Since this is not exactly a VPN service but simply a DNS service, the classic No-Log brand cannot be applied to it, but in general, it can be purely applied here.

SERVICE COLLECTS:

  1. Connection timestamps.
  2. Bandwidth usage.

SERVICE DOES NOT COLLECT:

  1. Browsing history.
  2. IP address.
  3. DNS queries.
  4. Personally identifiable information.

WARP by Cloudflare is an entirely free service, but users have the option to upgrade their plan to WARP+ or WARP Unlimited. The unlimited version costs $4 per month and can be bought only in an App Store or Google Play, which is a lot for a regular DNS service that does not provide any significant protection compared to VPN services.

If you are interested in not just a tiny layer of protection but a full-fledged lead wall between you and the outside world while you enjoy your favorite content or surf prohibited sites, then we recommend that you go to our reviews tab, where we have collected a selection of more than several dozens of services.

We strongly recommend not downloading torrent files from WARP since your Internet connection using this service is not very secure. Moreover, the service itself has restrictions on its use, which will not allow you to download heavy files, and if we remember that WARP does not provide a country selection function, then it can be removed entirely from the list of services that allow you to at least look at torrenting.

WARP by Cloudflare is a reliable service that will only partially help you protect yourself. Most VPN services cope with this task much better since they have entirely different degrees of protection and operating principles. Yes, WARP is not bad, but you cannot feel complete security with it as with Nord VPN or CyberGhost VPN, which are packed with features and very serious protection. At a minimum, the main reason why WARP is not the best security tool is that it does not have a choice of servers and automatically connects to a server in your country.
