SmartDisk FAT32 Format Utility is a small free tool for formatting external hard drives, USB flash drives and memory cards in the FAT32 file system. It was made by SmartDisk Corp. for its external drives and was later also distributed by Verbatim. Its main purpose is to get around a limitation of Windows: the built-in format dialog does not offer FAT32 for volumes larger than 32 GB, and this utility formats such drives as FAT32 without any command-line tools.
A FAT32 drive is still needed by many devices that cannot read NTFS or exFAT, such as older game consoles, digital cameras, car stereos, TV sets and media players. Keep in mind that FAT32 cannot store single files larger than 4 GB, and that formatting deletes all data on the selected drive.
The SmartDisk FAT32 Format Utility formats external drives larger than 32 GB as FAT32, which the Windows format dialog does not allow.
