7z Extractor is a small free tool for unpacking 7z archives on Windows. It is a lightweight program that decompresses 7z files while keeping the extracted data exactly as it was stored in the archive. The interface is minimal: you select a 7z file, choose where to save its contents and click the Extract button. This way, it allows you to quickly extract the data present in 7z archives without learning a full-featured archiver.
7z Extractor also supports a few formats besides 7z: TAR, GZ, BZip2 and ZIP files. For 7z archives, it handles the four main compression methods - LZMA, LZMA2, PPMd and BZip2. The program only extracts archives; it cannot create new archives, edit their contents or preview files before extraction. For password-protected 7z archives, you tick the Password option and type the password; if the password is missing or wrong, the program shows the message "Failed to open file".
Features:
7z Extractor unpacks 7z, ZIP, GZ, TAR and BZip2 archives with just a few clicks.
The extracted files are saved to a folder of your choice on the computer. Using the same extraction process, you can decompress the other supported archive types. There is no drag-and-drop support or file preview, which keeps the program simple but limits it compared with full archivers.
7z Extractor runs on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 and 11, in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. The last known version is 1.0, released in 2014, and the official website 7zextractor.com is no longer online, so the program is not developed any more. The 7z format itself is very efficient: its high compression ratio usually makes 7z archives smaller than archives in other common formats.
