Max lets musicians, visual artists, and developers design interactive media projects without following a fixed timeline. It can be used to assemble synthesizers, process recorded or live sound, build responsive visuals, and control performance equipment. Projects can react to playing, gestures, or sensor data, making the software useful for installations, live sets, and experimental tools.

Work takes place in a patch editor where linked blocks pass messages, audio, and image data between one another. MIDI, MPE, and OSC connections bring in controller input, while serial communication can connect electronics such as Arduino boards. Jitter handles video and graphics, Gen creates code for real-time processing, and modular libraries supply parts for sound and visual projects.
