OpenToonz is a free version of the famous Toonz professional animation program, successfully used for many years by the American company 20th Century Fox and Japanese anime studio Ghibli. The application has open source code, which allows users to develop the program by themselves, adding new features and improving the graphical interface.
To date, the OpenToonz program has grown into a full-fledged stand-alone application that has serious features. The program allows you to draw vector and raster graphics, including the use of graphics tablets, which is very much like to use the artists who are used to draw the pen. In addition, the program contains tools for creating so-called skeletal animation. The application also supports the traditional process of creating animations drawn on a tracing paper. Thanks to the TWAIN standard, the software is able to capture images from scanners and digital cameras.
The main benefit of using OpenToonz is its ability to draw vector and raster graphics and support of traditional animation process, ideal for professional animators.
OpenToonz features a wide range of palettes, paints, inks, custom brushes and other tools. In addition, more than a hundred special effects are available, such as: changing the image style, superimposing incident light, wavy distortion, etc. Functions such as automatic frame coloring and the ability to apply changes made in one scene to another are also available.

Users can also use their graphics tablets to draw using this tool. This program also contains some tools for creating skeletal animations.
OpenToonz supports the traditional process of creating animations drawn on tracing paper. This application supports Windows, Linux, and the MacOS operating systems.
However, beginners might find difficulties using this tool. It does not provide that much detailed guide. Also, users might find poor performance on the older systems.
