Overview

Rescuezilla is a free, open-source and user-friendly disk imaging and system backup tool, often described as a graphical interface for Clonezilla. It runs from a bootable USB stick or CD, so it can back up and restore a computer even when the installed operating system no longer starts, and it works with Windows, Mac and Linux systems. It provides system backup, disk cloning, and disk imaging features, allowing users to quickly and easily restore their systems to a working state.

• Rescue Tools: Rescuezilla includes a data recovery utility for undeleting files and a file manager, so you can copy important files off a computer that no longer boots or that you cannot log in to. • Image Explorer: With Image Explorer (beta), Rescuezilla can mount a backup image and let you browse and copy individual files from it without restoring the whole disk. It also works with virtual machine images.

• Clonezilla Compatibility: Rescuezilla is fully compatible with Clonezilla images and can also restore images made by other imaging tools and virtualization software, including VirtualBox (VDI), VMware (VMDK), Hyper-V (VHDx), Qemu (QCOW2) and raw .dd or .img files.

• Advanced Environments: Rescuezilla fully supports Linux md RAID, LVM and disks without a partition table.

• User-Friendly Interface: Rescuezilla has a user-friendly interface that allows users to easily navigate through the different features and options.

• Open Source: Rescuezilla is released under the GNU GPL, is based on Ubuntu and partclone, and is available in 32-bit and 64-bit builds. It was forked from Redo Backup and Recovery after that project was abandoned and is still actively developed; version 2.6.2 was released in May 2026.
