Skanect Free turns scans of physical objects into 3D models for design, research, game assets, and personal projects. It works with a supported depth camera to capture an item from different angles, then builds a mesh that can be opened in other modeling tools. It can also record surface color when a model needs more than shape alone.

A supported depth camera can turn a physical object into an exportable mesh without building its shape by hand.

During capture, the program shows a preview as the camera moves around an object or the object turns. Presets cover objects, people, and rooms, while editing tools can close mesh gaps, remove stray fragments, crop planes, and reduce polygon counts. Models can be scaled or rotated before export in STL, OBJ, PLY, or VRML format. Free exports are limited to 5,000 faces.

Features:

  • Capture geometry with a supported depth camera
  • View the developing mesh during scanning
  • Record object color alongside geometry
  • Fill mesh holes and remove stray fragments
  • Adjust model scale, orientation, and polygon count
  • Export meshes as STL, OBJ, PLY, or VRML
Windows 7, 8, or 10
Compatible depth camera and drivers

PROS
Makes depth-camera scanning approachable for beginners.
Shows scan coverage and tracking in real time.
Captures color alongside object geometry.

CONS
Free exports have a low polygon limit.
Tracking can fail on shiny or featureless surfaces.
