SmartCAT

SmartCAT (now written Smartcat) is a translation automation platform designed for professional translators, translation agencies, and corporate translation departments. It was originally developed by ABBYY Language Services. This software stands out due to its ease of use and flexibility, enabling the user to work efficiently and comfortably. It implements various features such as machine and AI translation, built-in dictionaries (early versions were linked to ABBYY Lingvo dictionaries), management of translation memory, and much more.

Translation work is no longer a solitary task with SmartCAT as it offers real-time collaboration on the same document by several translators. Moreover, with built-in vendor management, users can easily manage and track the work of different vendors, and a marketplace gives access to freelance translators, editors and agencies. For documents of various formats (PDF, scanned documents, images), SmartCAT provides automatic recognition and conversion (OCR).

With this approach to translation automation, once the translation memory and glossaries are connected, new documents to be translated are analyzed to find matches with segments and sub-segments that correspond to previously translated materials. The program automatically inserts the matching human translation saved in the translation memory from previous documents.

All features and documents are hosted on a remote server in the cloud. No installation is necessary: the platform is accessible via a web browser on any device connected to the Internet. A separate Smartcat Translator desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux translates selected text in other applications with a keyboard shortcut. Registration is required, as secure authentication is used to protect access to the server and maintain the confidentiality of the user's materials - documents, translation memories, and glossaries.

Supported formats include DOCX, DOC, TXT, PPTX, XLSX, XLS, PDF, JPG, TIFF, BMP, PNG, GIF, DJVU, HTML, TTX, SDLXLIFF, XLF, XLIFF and TMX; the platform currently handles more than 50 file formats.

Once the translation is finished, the document can be downloaded as a bilingual file (containing the source text and translation) or a monolingual file (source text only or translation only). Smartcat offers a free plan as well as paid subscriptions for teams and companies.
