What is Spriter?
Spriter is a 2D animation software for game development. Developed by BrashMonkey, Spriter enables you to create modular character animations for your games from separate body-part images. It is a versatile tool for creating keyframe-based skeletal animations and sprite sheets for games, as well as for animating character actions, such as walking and jumping.
The software is designed to be usable for both beginners and experienced users. It features an interface with a canvas, a palette of project images and a timeline that allows users to quickly create animations. It also includes features such as keyframe-based timeline editing, bones, inverse kinematics, character maps for swapping image sets, and variables, triggers and tags for game logic.
Spriter animations can be used in game engines through official and community runtime APIs, with full support in Unity and Construct 2, and reference implementations in C#, C++ and JavaScript. It also exports finished animations as PNG images, strips, sprite sheets or GIF animations.
Spriter allows users to quickly and easily create 2D animations.
Features
1. Timeline-Based Editing: Create animations with keyframes, and Spriter generates the in-between frames automatically.
2. Bones and Inverse Kinematics: Animate characters with bones, IK or forward kinematics and locking of body parts.
3. Character Maps: Create character variations by swapping image sets without redoing the animations.
4. Game Logic Data: Add collision rectangles, action points, variables, triggers and timeline tags for use in the game.
5. Image Export: Export animations as PNG images, strips, sprite sheets or GIF animations.
6. Game Engine Compatibility: Runtime APIs are available for Unity, Construct 2 and 3, and other engines.
7. Animation Preview: Preview animations with onion skinning and easing curves before exporting them.
8. Sound and Lip-Sync: Trigger sound effects on the timeline and use Papagayo files for lip-sync.
9. Animation Export: Export animations for use in game engines.
10. Spriting Tools: Create sprite sheets from sequential images and use the pixel art mode for retro animations.
