Since Perl is open source software, it is part of the standard installation of almost any Unix / Linux system. ActiveState took this standard Perl installation as the basis and created its own configured and fully ready-to-use Perl distribution for Windows called ActivePerl, which it has maintained since 1997. The package is easy to install in the system, and its Community Edition was free for development and internal use.
This distribution is suitable for everyone who is engaged in programming for the web, and, in particular, in the language of Perl. This package is useful for those who write and test various scripts. Both 32- and 64-bit versions of operating systems are supported. ActivePerl from ActiveState contains the Perl interpreter for Windows and Perl for ISAPI - plugin for IIS web server, PerlScript - ActiveX engine, and a graphical Perl Critic tool; versions up to 5.26 also include the Perl Package Manager. Newer builds are distributed through the ActiveState Platform.
