EPANET is a free, open source, public domain hydraulic and water quality modeling software developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. EPANET is a powerful, accurate, and versatile tool for analyzing water distribution systems, and is used worldwide by civil and environmental engineers, water and wastewater utilities, and environmental organizations.

EPANET is capable of simulating a variety of water distribution system components and configurations, including pumps, valves, reservoirs, tanks, and pipes. It can also simulate pressure and flow characteristics, water age, source quality, and water quality in storage tanks. EPANET is used to analyze the operation of water distribution systems and to optimize the design of new systems.

Key
EPANET allows for the analysis of water distribution networks to ensure efficient and reliable operation.
Features:

• Network Modeling: EPANET can model the pressure and flow characteristics of water distribution networks of virtually any size and complexity. It can also simulate pumps, valves, reservoirs, tanks, and pipes.

• Design Optimization: EPANET can optimize the design of new water distribution systems, ensuring efficient operation and optimal performance.

• Pressure and Flow Characteristics: EPANET can simulate the pressure and flow characteristics of water distribution systems, helping to identify potential problems such as pressure losses and water hammer.

• Water Age and Quality: EPANET can simulate the age and quality of water in distribution systems, allowing users to assess the impact of water age on water quality and identify potential contamination sources.

• Report Generation: EPANET can generate comprehensive reports on system performance, including detailed diagrams of pressure and flow characteristics, and water quality results.

• User Interface: EPANET has an intuitive user interface that allows users to quickly and easily create, edit, and analyze water distribution system models.

• Real-Time Control: EPANET can simulate the real-time control of water systems, allowing users to evaluate the impact of different control strategies on system operation.

• Data Exchange: EPANET can import data from other software packages, allowing users to easily integrate the data into their EPANET models.

• Data Output: EPANET can export data to other software packages, allowing users to easily share their analysis results with colleagues.

• Technical Support: EPANET has an active user community and provides free technical support to help users make the most of their EPANET models.
The EPANET software is designed to be used on Windows-based operating systems, such as Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10. It will not run on Apple, Linux, or Android systems. The program requires a minimum of 2 GB of RAM, 300 MB of available hard disk space, and a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768. The software also requires a mouse or other pointing device.

PROS

EPANET is a software which allows users to model water distribution networks. It is free, open source and easy to use. It is able to simulate hydraulic and water quality behaviour within pressurized pipe networks. I found it useful for running simulations and analyzing different scenarios. The interface is quite intuitive and the output results provide useful information. It is also possible to add custom controls such as pumps or valves. I think it is a reliable tool for simulating and analyzing water distribution networks.
