GetRight

GetRight is a veteran download manager for Windows, first published by Headlight Software in 1997. Everyone that has a computer will undoubtedly find themselves downloading a file off the internet. Whether it's something as simple as an image or as large as a movie, GetRight makes the process easier. Large files such as videos, disk images or game installers can take a long time to download, depending on the server and the connection, and a download can fail halfway. GetRight has a number of special features that make that process much easier.

The most apparent bonus is GetRight's ability to download a large file faster than a single connection would. GetRight does this with segmented downloading: it breaks a file into pieces, downloads them at the same time, if possible from several mirror servers, and puts the file back together once it's fully downloaded. The actual gain depends on the server and the connection. GetRight also keeps track of alternate download locations and switches to another mirror automatically when a server is slow or unavailable. Besides HTTP and FTP, GetRight supports HTTPS, FTPS, BitTorrent and Metalink downloads.

Another problem that people run into with large files is that they might not be able to finish the download. This is either due to time constraints or, even worse, a lost connection. GetRight can resume lost or interrupted downloads from where they last left off, as long as the server supports resuming, even after a crash of the computer. Downloads can also be scheduled for a specific time, after which the program can hang up the connection or shut down the PC. The program automatically opens downloaded files and has its own download history you can reference if you can't find the file you just finished downloading. It can also monitor the clipboard and pick up download links copied there, and its interface can be switched between Basic and Full modes.
GetRight comes with a handful of extra tools, most notably the ability to scan web pages and pick the files you want to download from them. It can check files with MD5 and SHA-1 checksums and integrates with Internet Explorer. Version 6 has Standard and Pro licence modes; Pro adds uploading, scripting and a built-in web server. GetRight 6.5, released in 2011, is still the latest version, and it runs as a trial until registered.
