Teamspeak is a long-standing choice for voice communication in online gaming. It is built for clear group voice chat with low latency and a small footprint while a game is running, and it is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

It is possible to run a private server with Teamspeak, in order to have full control over a secure private channel with your friends or teammates. It also supports an in-game overlay through plugins, so you can see who is talking while you're playing. This is useful when you are talking to teammates you do not know well. You're in control of who is allowed into your server, so there is no need to put up with irritating players on public channels. You can set the permissions to whatever you want. Choose who is allowed in, who gets to speak, who can create channels and what kind of channels they can create, and more.

The sound quality is good, with noise suppression and echo cancellation, automatic microphone volume adjustment and a choice of voice codecs. Push-to-talk and voice activation modes are available, and 3D positional sound can place other speakers around you in the headphones.

Teamspeak puts an emphasis on user privacy. The company states that it uses AES-based encryption and gives users control over the data they share. A myTeamSpeak account is optional for basic use of the client. Since servers can be self-hosted, you can keep your voice traffic on a server you run yourself instead of a third-party service.

Teamspeak also supports file transfers through the server's file browser, letting you share files with your friends or team inside channels, within the limits set by the server admin.

Customize your experience with hotkeys, which can be assigned to keyboard keys, mouse buttons, joysticks or gamepads, and with themes and add-ons for the user interface. An SDK is available for developers who want to integrate TeamSpeak technology or create their own plugins and add-ons.

Teamspeak also has the standard features expected from a chat application: direct messages, individual volume control for each user, text chat in channels and on the server, and mobile apps for Android and iOS. The client is free, while hosting a server for more than 32 users requires a paid licence or a rented server. The next-generation TeamSpeak 6 client is available as a public beta.
