Awave Studio

Awave Studio from FMJ-Software is a multi-purpose Windows audio tool that reads a wide range of audio and synthesizer file formats from different computer platforms, software samplers and hardware synthesizers. It can be used as a file format converter, an audio editor or a synthesizer instrument editor, and it helps users transfer sampled instruments and waveforms to many capable musical instruments and devices.

Its main benefit is converting sample libraries and synth instruments between hundreds of audio and synthesizer formats in one program.

Awave Studio is organized around a collection tree of instruments, layers and waveforms, with wizards for batch conversion, audio processing, instrument processing, MIDI processing and audio recording. Instruments can be auditioned directly from the PC keyboard or from an external MIDI keyboard, so users can listen to a converted sample before saving it.

The program reads and writes the instrument formats of many commercial synthesizers and software samplers, including formats from AKAI, Ensoniq, Korg, Kurzweil, Roland, Yamaha and Native Instruments. It can also read disk formats that Windows cannot normally access, such as AKAI S1000 and S3000 CDs, Ensoniq EPS 16+ and ASR-10 CDs and Kurzweil K2000 native-format CDs. Song data can be converted between several formats, for example MOD tracker modules into Standard MIDI Files with custom instruments, and FM-synthesis instruments from Yamaha DX-series SysEx files can be converted into sampled instruments.

Awave Studio is shareware: the trial version runs for 30 days, after which a paid single-user license is required to keep using it. Builds are offered for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, 32-bit Windows 7 to 11 and Windows 11 on Arm; macOS and Linux users can run it through Wine. The program is aimed at sample and instrument work, so it offers only very basic low-level MIDI event editing and does not replace a full sequencer, and it cannot transcribe audio recordings into MIDI notes.
