CFG Editor for Flight Simulator 2004

CFG Editor (the window title reads "Flight Simulator 2004 CFG Editor", the program is also known as FS9CfgEdit) is a small freeware utility by Martin Wright of MW Graphics. It provides an interface that simplifies editing of fs9.cfg, the main configuration file of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight (FS9). When it starts, the program automatically locates the current fs9.cfg file in the Application Data folder of your user profile and loads it, so there is no need to search for the file manually.

The contents of the file are displayed in a tree view. Each section of fs9.cfg is a branch of the tree; clicking the plus sign next to a section expands it and lists all of its keys, and clicking a key name displays its current value in the edit box on the right side of the window. This makes it much easier to find a single setting than scrolling through the whole file in a text editor.

CFG Editor shows every section and key of fs9.cfg in a tree view, so FS2004 settings can be found and changed without searching through the text file.

Features:

• Automatic loading: CFG Editor finds fs9.cfg in its standard location and opens it at startup.

• Tree view: sections and their entries are shown as a tree, with Expand and Collapse buttons for the whole list.

• Sort alphabetically: sections and keys can be sorted by name, which makes long lists easier to scan.

• Find: a search box at the bottom of the window locates a section or key by name.

• Edit values: select a key, type a new value in the Key Value box and apply it with the "Set new value" button.

• Manage keys: individual keys can be deleted, and new keys can be added to the selected section.

• Manage sections: a whole section can be deleted with one click, and new sections can be added to the file.

• Reload: the "Reload FS9 cfg file" button loads the configuration file from disk again.

• View in Notepad: opens the configuration file in Windows Notepad for direct text editing.

• Built-in help: the Help button shows instructions in the main window, for example how to locate and edit a value stored in a key.

• About box: shows the program version, the versions of the MW Graphics DLL files installed on the system, copyright notes and contact information.

CFG Editor is useful for Flight Simulator 2004 users who adjust graphics, display or other settings in fs9.cfg by hand. It works only with the FS2004 configuration file and is not a general-purpose editor for INI, XML or other configuration files. The last known version is 4.00.3 (copyright 1984-2004 Martin Wright). The program is no longer developed, but it is still listed among the MW Graphics utilities for flight simulators, next to tools such as the DXTBmp texture editor. Because every change is written to fs9.cfg, it is a good idea to keep a backup copy of the original file before editing.
