Epi Info

Epi Info is a suite of public health software tools designed to help with the analysis, management, and visualization of public health data. Developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Epi Info is used by public health professionals, researchers, and healthcare providers around the world to collect, analyze, and represent data.

Epi Info Features

Data Entry: Epi Info's data entry capabilities allow users to create and manage data collection forms for surveys, interviews, and other data collection activities. Forms can be customized to include specific questions and answer choices, as well as field validation and skip logic.

Epi Info provides users with an easy to use, free, and open source application to facilitate the collection, management, and analysis of epidemiological data.

Data Analysis: Epi Info includes a set of analysis tools that help users to explore, summarize, and visualize data. Users can generate descriptive statistics, perform hypothesis tests, and generate charts and graphs in the command-based Classic Analysis module or in the Visual Dashboard.

Data Management: Epi Info stores data in Microsoft Access or SQL Server databases and can read data from formats such as text, CSV, Excel and MySQL, with commands for cleaning, recoding and transforming data.

Data Sharing: Data can be exported to other formats, and the Data Packager tool helps to prepare data for transfer to colleagues and other users.

Surveillance: Epi Info is used for the rapid assessment of disease outbreaks and for the development of small to mid-sized disease surveillance systems.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Epi Info includes a Maps module that allows users to map data by coordinates, as choropleth maps or by dot density and to view health trends geographically.

Programming Language: Epi Info includes the Check Code language for adding calculations and logic to forms, and Classic Analysis uses commands such as READ, FREQ, TABLES and GRAPH.

StatCalc: Epi Info includes statistical calculators for sample size, power, and other common epidemiologic calculations.

User Interface: Epi Info has a launcher window with buttons for Create Forms, Enter Data, Create Maps, StatCalc, Classic and Visual Dashboard that makes the software easy to navigate.

Languages: Besides English, the interface is available in Spanish, French and Portuguese.

Mobile Capabilities: Epi Info has companion apps for Android and iOS, allowing users to collect data in the field, and a web version was also offered.

Cost: Epi Info is free, public domain software, and its source code is published on GitHub.

Support: CDC ended product development and technical assistance for Epi Info in September 2025; the desktop version still works, but it no longer receives updates.
