ByteFence Anti-Malware is a malware scanner that detects various types of threats on your computer and, in its Pro edition, can also protect your computer in real time. It is by no means a full-fledged antivirus, but is positioned as some kind of "assistant" to the latter. The scanner looks for malware, potentially unwanted programs and suspicious files. A Gamer mode automatically disables some features while you watch a movie or play a game.

The scan is started by pressing the big "Scan" button. As is customary with this type of software, you choose the kind of check before starting it, for example a quick or a full scan. ByteFence Anti-Malware also adds its own item to the Explorer context menu, which allows you to quickly scan an individual file or folder.

In addition to threat scanning, the program can also undo unwanted changes of the browser home page and search provider and remove malicious add-ons. ByteFence Anti-Malware works with Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge. Detailed information about the performed operations is saved in the "Stats" section, and the settings include scan schedules, a whitelist, quarantine and proxy options.

The basic scanner is free; real-time protection belongs to the paid Pro edition, which can be tried for 14 days. Several security vendors, including Malwarebytes, flag ByteFence as a potentially unwanted program because it was often installed bundled with other software, and the official bytefence.com website is no longer online.
