DirectShow FilterPack is a short set of filters (decoders) that will allow you to play different music and video formats. Initially, you can already play MP3 music, because Fraunhofer MP3 decoder is installed together with Windows.
But unlike MP3 files, Windows doesn't know how to handle Vorbis audio, for example. With OGG Splitter (plus FFDShow), Windows can handle Vorbis Audio.
This filter package was designed to work with FFDShow. FFDShow is a very powerful DirectShow filter for audio and video decompression, such as DivX / XviD and Vorbis / AAC, but it can also do much more. Thus, you can install a single DirectShow FilterPack, instead of some other filter packages that install more than one filter for the same purpose.
DirectShow FilterPack simplifies media playback by enabling Windows to handle various music and video formats through a single installation.
DirectShow can be used as a media player;Zoom Player, RadLight, The Core Media Player, Windows Media Player, and Media Player Classic (MPC). (Note: This does not apply to Win AMP or XMPlay as this plugin is based as a media player.) (Note: "I do not mean Media Player Classic (MPC) as most of these Splitter filters are already integrated into the MPC.)
FFDShow:
- QuickTime Alternative
- QuickTime Alternative allows you to play QuickTime files (MOV, QT) without installing QuickTime Player.
- Real Alternative player
- Real Alternative allows you to play back RealMedia files (RA, RM, RAM, RMVB) without installing RealPlayer.
- Windows Media Player 10 Lite
- For those of you who have removed Windows Media Player from nLite, this package allows you to play WMA and WMV.

DirectShow FilterPack is a simple yet powerful application that has lots of useful features. You can use it for playing and decoding audio and video files, encoding or creating multimedia files and so on. Another good thing is that the app doesn’t contain an included media player so it doesn’t cause conflicts between various codecs and filters. Users especially like the fact that the app can handle both popular and obscure codecs. Unfortunately some people complain that the app doesn’t have updates. They also say that it doesn’t get technical support or customer service. Nevertheless, considering the app is completely free, it’s still worth giving it a try.
