Garmin MapInstall

Garmin MapInstall is a free Windows utility for anyone who uses a Garmin GPS device. It transfers map products that are already installed on the computer, such as City Navigator or topographic maps used in MapSource and BaseCamp, to a compatible Garmin device or to its memory card. Instead of copying map files by hand, you select the device, pick the map regions you need and let the program build and send the map to the device. MapInstall does not sell or download maps itself: the maps have to be purchased separately, and Garmin states that the software will not work unless you already own a map product.

Garmin MapInstall lets you pick only the map regions you need and install them on a Garmin device or its memory card.

Garmin MapInstall is a completely free software that the company released for its customer base. After choosing the target device, you see a map of the installed product and select regions by clicking them; a second click deselects a region, and zoom, pan and a Find a City tool help you locate the right area. A storage gauge shows how much free space remains on the device or memory card, so you can trim a large map to fit. You can install several regions or whole countries in one go, and Garmin kept updating the program for years, with version 4.2.4 released in 2022.

The program has its limits. It works only with Garmin GPS devices and Garmin map products, and it does not update the maps themselves: new map versions for most Garmin devices are delivered through Garmin Express. MapInstall needs Windows XP SP3 or later with .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and Windows Media Player 11, and its setup also installs the Garmin USB drivers. On Windows the program can also be launched from Garmin BaseCamp, and a separate MapInstall build exists for macOS. For owners of Garmin map products, it is the standard way to put purchased maps on a device.
