Kindle Comic Converter (KCC) is a free and open-source app for converting comic books, manga and graphic novels into files that can be read on Kindle devices and other e-ink readers such as Kobo and reMarkable. It is developed by independent volunteers and is not made or endorsed by Amazon. The software is available for Windows, macOS and Linux and is published under the ISC license.
Features
- Supports a variety of input formats, including CBR, CBZ, PDF, and EPUB.
Kindle Comic Converter turns comic archives and PDFs into fullscreen, device-sized books that are much smaller than the source files.
- Creates Kindle-compatible MOBI/AZW3 files (a single dual-format file with the .mobi extension).
- Also outputs EPUB, KEPUB for Kobo, CBZ, PDF and plain folders of images.
- Accepts folders of PNG, JPG, GIF or WebP images as input.
- Opens CB7, 7Z, ZIP and RAR archives with the help of 7-Zip.
- Ready-made device profiles for many Kindle, Kobo and reMarkable models.
- Custom profile with your own screen width and height.
- Downscales pages to the native resolution of the selected device.
- Greatly reduces file size, for example a 600 MB manga volume to about 100 MB.
- Displays pages in fullscreen without margins, with proper fixed layout support.
- Manga mode for right-to-left reading and splitting order.
- Webtoon mode for long vertical strips.
- Lightnovel mode that only resizes images and keeps the original file structure.
- Spread splitter that splits, rotates or both for double-page spreads.
- Rotation options for spreads, including right rotation and rotated spread first.
- Semi-automatic detection of two-page spreads from pre-split pages.
- Automatic cropping of margins and page numbers with adjustable cropping power.
- Preserve margin setting that backs up the calculated crop by a percentage.
- Optional cropping of empty sections between panels.
- Automatic detection of black or white borders, with manual override.
- Upscale option for images smaller than the device resolution.
- Stretch option to fill the whole screen.
- Cover fill option that center-crops the cover to the device screen.
- Gamma correction and autocontrast to fix gray, faded blacks.
- Color mode that keeps color images instead of converting them to grayscale.
- Rainbow effect removal for color e-ink screens.
- Choice between JPEG, PNG, WebP and mozJpeg image output.
- Adjustable JPEG quality.
- Grayscale PNG images quantized to 16 colors to match e-ink screens.
- Option to turn 1x4 strips into 2x2 strips.
- Virtual Panel View support on Kindle, with two-panel or four-panel layouts.
- Option to invert the page turn direction.
- Batch split of large books into several volumes, automatically or by subfolder.
- File fusion that combines several input files into one book.
- Custom title and author metadata, or a title taken from ComicInfo.xml.
- Built-in editor for the metadata of comic files.
- Smart cover cropping from wide images.
- Target file size limit for the output.
- Option to delete the source files after conversion.
- The output file is saved next to the original input by default.
- Drag and drop files into the window and click Convert.
- Detailed tooltips explain every option.
- Command-line tools (kcc-c2e and kcc-c2p) for power users.
- Available as a Windows installer, macOS disk images, and Linux AppImage, Flatpak and Docker builds.
- MOBI output requires KindleGen, which is detected automatically from Amazon Kindle Previewer.
- Converted files are copied to the documents folder of the reader over USB.
- Actively developed on GitHub, with new releases published regularly.
KCC's main goal is maximum image quality at a much smaller file size. Downscaling to the native resolution of the reader also improves battery life, page turn speed and general performance on e-readers with little memory and storage. For the best results the project recommends high-resolution, DRM-free sources, and it advises against editing KCC output in Calibre, because Calibre does not properly support fixed layout EPUB and MOBI files and can break the formatting and page numbers.
