MikTex is a free distribution for TeX/LaTeX writing on local machines. It is an open source project. This single program contains many related applications within it.

MikTex also works as a simple TeX editor. It can provide the tools necessary to prepare documents using the Tex/LaTeX markup language. Currently, this application supports Windows, MacOS, Linux, and even Docker. It has a portable edition that allows users to run the application directly from a portable storage device without any need to install it.

MikTex also works as a command line installer. All of the setup instructions are available on the official website. The application works really well and fast for the end users.

MiKTeX for Windows is for books, especially ones containing mathematics. The author is Donald Ervin Knuth and it can be installed with drag and drop. It is a very simple and easy to use program that is completely free, the website allows you to donate. Is good quality software, will need a 64-bit operating system to function so I do not recommend it to everyone.
