.NET Framework Version 1.1

.NET Framework Version 1.1 is the Microsoft runtime and class library required by applications that were built for this version of the .NET Framework. Released in 2003, it improved scalability and performance over version 1.0 and was included in Windows Server 2003. It added ASP.NET mobile controls (formerly the Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit), which let a single web application render correctly on phones and PDAs. It also brought support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), as well as built-in data providers for Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) and Oracle databases. The package has no user interface of its own: it installs the common language runtime and the class libraries, and programs that need them use them automatically.

Version 1.1 introduced side-by-side execution, so it can be installed next to other .NET Framework versions without affecting the applications that rely on them. Security changes allowed Windows Forms assemblies to run in a semi-trusted mode from the Internet and enabled code access security for ASP.NET applications. The redistributable package is free. It supports Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 and also runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7, but Microsoft does not support it on Windows 8 or later. Microsoft support for .NET Framework 1.1 has ended, so it should only be installed for older applications that specifically require this version. Service Pack 1 for version 1.1 later added security and reliability fixes, and Visual Studio .NET 2003 was the matching development environment.

.NET Framework Version 1.1 lets older applications built for it run on Windows, adding ASP.NET mobile controls and IPv6 support.
