A bright white screen can be uncomfortable to look at in a dark room, especially late in the evening, and some laptops and desktop monitors have no convenient dimming controls. In such cases a simple way to make the screen darker helps you work, read or browse more comfortably without changing the settings of your monitor each time.

DimScreen helps you lower your screen brightness to a comfortable level. It allows you to set the dimming in increments of 10%, so you can easily adjust the light with 10 levels from 0% to 90%. Some of the key features of this tiny software are listed below:

DimScreen lets you darken the whole screen with a single click in the tray menu or with customizable hotkeys.

Features:

  • It is free and works with any display, because it dims the whole screen with a dark overlay instead of changing the monitor backlight. Both desktop PC and laptop users can use it, as it is simple for everyone.
  • You can change the dimming level with the hotkeys Ctrl++ and Ctrl+-, and you can assign other hotkey shortcuts in the Settings dialog if these combinations are already used.
  • DimScreen is a minimalistic tool that runs quietly in the background, so you can conveniently access its options from the system tray icon.
  • It does not need installation or restart to work. You can simply extract the program from its ZIP archive to any folder on your computer and run it.
  • It is easy to use: pick a percentage in the tray menu to set the dimming level, or open Settings and About from the same menu.
  • It has a simple interface, so a beginner can configure it without worrying about the technical details. Note that it does not work properly with video windows and does not dim a second monitor.

The main advantage of DimScreen is that it is easy to run on any Windows PC. All you have to do is extract the program files to a folder, and the software will be ready to launch. No reboots or installations are needed to operate this app. DimScreen was created by skrommel as part of his One Hour Software collection on DonationCoder.

Moreover, the hotkeys allow you to adjust the dimming level depending on the environment (day and night). You can also manually reduce the screen light for different tasks, such as reading documents in the evening or viewing maps at night on a laptop that is missing dimming controls. All of this can be achieved with a small program that is free to use. The latest version is 1.1, which added the hotkeys; the program is no longer updated.
