FrostyFix

FrostyFix is a small free utility for players who mod Frostbite engine games from Electronic Arts with Frosty Mod Manager. Frosty normally tells the game where the mod data is stored through a command line argument. When the game is started from EA Desktop, the Epic Games Store or Steam instead of the old Origin client, that argument can get lost and the game launches without any mods, even though they were applied in Frosty. FrostyFix solves this by setting the GAME_DATA_DIR environment variable for the launcher instead, so the platform the game was bought on no longer matters.

Here are the main functions of FrostyFix:

- Game detection: the program reads the Windows registry to find installed Frosty-supported games, such as Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Battlefront II, Battlefield 1, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Need for Speed, Need for Speed Payback and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

- Pack selection: choose the Frosty mod pack (ModData profile) that should be loaded.

- Platform choice: launch with mods through EA Desktop, the Epic Games Store or Origin.

- Global mode: set the path as a user-wide variable that also works for Steam and stays active until you click Disable Mods.

- Disable Mods: remove the variable and close the launchers so that other Frostbite games start normally again.

- Settings: launch the game together with Frosty, point to the Frosty installation folder, add a custom game that was not detected, and turn the update checker on or off.

How to use it

Apply your mods in Frosty Mod Manager as usual and launch the game from it once, then exit the game, start FrostyFix, select the game, pack and platform and click the launch button. Mods must be disabled in FrostyFix before you play any other Frostbite game, otherwise that game may fail to start.

FrostyFix was created by Dyvinia. It is a portable program distributed as a single executable file, it requires the .NET 6 Desktop Runtime, and its source code is published on GitHub. The last release came out in December 2022 and the repository is now archived, so the tool is no longer developed; the author recommends the newer DatapathFix plug-in for Frosty, which supports all games, as an alternative.

FrostyFix lets Frosty mods load in games bought on EA Desktop, the Epic Games Store or Steam, not only on Origin.
