Nokia Software Updater

Updating the software on your mobile phone or smartphone is as important as updating the software on your computer. Some phone makers release a dedicated desktop application that updates the whole software of the phone in one step. That's what Nokia did with the Nokia Software Updater.

The utility is a tool with a simple, wizard-style interface that checks Nokia's servers for newer firmware for the connected phone, that is, a new version of the whole phone software rather than individual applications. When you connect your phone to a computer or laptop running Nokia Software Updater, it automatically detects the model of your device, shows whether a newer software version is available, and allows you to download and install it. It should be noted that to install updates on your phone, it must be connected using a USB cable; other methods of connection are not supported. The update replaces the phone software, so it is wise to back up contacts, messages and other data first, and the process must not be interrupted. The tool could also restore the software of phones that no longer start.

The firmware packages are downloaded from Nokia's servers, so the download and installation can take some time. Nokia Software Updater worked with S40 and S60 (Symbian) phones and coexisted with Nokia Ovi Suite on the same computer; a separate edition, Nokia Software Updater for Retail, was made for service points and also supported Lumia phones. Nokia's update servers have since been closed, so the tool is discontinued and can no longer download new firmware.

The main benefit of using Nokia Software Updater was its ability to detect the connected Nokia phone and install the latest official software for it.
