Windows USB/DVD Download Tool

This tool is compatible with a USB flash drive or a DVD. If you have downloaded Windows as an ISO file, the tool copies it onto an external device so that the device can be used to install the operating system. To create the device, you need a DVD or a USB flash drive with at least 4 GB of space. Once you have these items, you run the tool, choose the ISO file, select the media type, and it copies the files to the device. After that, you can install Windows directly from the USB flash drive or DVD.

One thing to consider is that Windows cannot be installed from the ISO file until its contents are placed onto a USB flash drive or a DVD. This is where the tool comes in handy. It makes the process far easier.

The tool itself runs only on Windows. It requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher, and on Windows XP the Image Mastering API 2.0 must be installed as well so that DVDs can be burned.

Microsoft originally released the utility as the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to accompany Windows 7 ISO files sold through the Microsoft Store, and it also works with Windows 8 and 8.1 images. Its source code was published under the GPLv2 licence in 2009. The tool erases the USB flash drive before copying, so any data stored on it is lost, and it uses the bootsect.exe utility from the Windows image to make the drive bootable. Microsoft no longer offers the tool on its download site and no longer develops it; for Windows 10 and Windows 11 the company provides the Media Creation Tool instead. The program is still useful for preparing installation media for older Windows versions, for example on computers without a DVD drive. A USB flash drive is also easier to carry and faster to install from than a set of installation discs, and the same drive can be used to install Windows on several computers.
