AutoCAD Electrical

AutoCAD Electrical is a widely used toolset for electrical control system design. Being built on top of AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical keeps all the functionality of the "original", but offers several additional tools that will help you work on the drawings of electrical circuits and control panels. AutoCAD Electrical works with the same DWG drawings as other programs of the AutoCAD "family" and includes symbol libraries for common standards such as IEC, JIC, JIS, GB, AS and NFPA.

The most useful tools which developers from Autodesk have introduced in the program are the project manager and the component tools. Components are inserted from icon menus sorted by category, and each of them receives a "tag". Tags can be assigned automatically or changed by hand, so you can quickly find the right item in the future. The base library of AutoCAD Electrical contains more than 65,000 intelligent electrical symbols. Each component has an editing dialog with catalog data, ratings, descriptions and cross-references.

The program also has several useful automation tools. For example, AutoCAD Electrical numbers wires and tags components automatically, creates PLC I/O drawings from spreadsheet data and keeps cross-references between coils and contacts up to date. Naturally, the toolset can also generate project reports such as bills of material, wire lists and terminal plans and export them to popular formats like Excel, Access or CSV.

AutoCAD Electrical works with 2D schematics and panel layouts, but its electromechanical link with Autodesk Inventor lets teams connect these drawings with 3D models. However, the Inventor license must be purchased separately. Today the Electrical toolset is included with an AutoCAD subscription.
