KindleGen is a program offered by Amazon, which allows authors to create eBooks to be used in a Kindle device, and publish them on the eBook store. It is the only program guaranteed by Amazon to work and be compatible with the Kindle store, but also allows users to export it as a KF8 or Mobi file for use other e-readers or applications.

Features:

  • Supports the import of various formats, such as HTML, EPUB, and XHTML.
  • Can open DOC and DOCX files.
  • Converts supported files to KF8 or Mobi formats that can be published on the Kindle eBook store

KindleGen is a program primarily intended for authors to publish their books on the Kindle eBook store. It is software created and supported by Amazon that comes with the guarantee that any eBook files exported from KindleGen will work with Kindle devices, and certain compatible applications. KindleGen does not have any other functionality apart from importing specific files, to be converted to KF8 and Mobi formats. For that reason, it is not intended for a wide demographic of users, who may seek other eBook functionality or editing tools. In addition, the software does not have a graphical user interface, which makes it much more difficult to use. The lack of a GUI makes it more intended for experienced users, specifically authors that are familiar with using HTML and want to publish their books on the Kindle store. KindleGen is available to download and install on Windows devices XP or newer and does not take up much space on a computer, less than 10 MB. Its size and lack of GUI allows users to run it easily on a wide variety of PCs, even concurrently with other programs running at the same time. Other software may offer better functionality or graphical interfaces, but they are not guaranteed to export files that would work and can be published on the Amazon Kindle store, which is the primary appeal of KindleGen as free downloadable software.

KindleGen seems like a great software that is niched for authors. It helps to create eBooks which would then be available on Kindle for reading. KindleGen is flexible in that it supports a variety of different formats, a few being HTML, EPUB, and more. Despite this flexibility, KindleGen is not easy to use since it doesn't have a clean user interface. Thus, it is specialized for those who are experienced rather than for beginners. Overall, it seems like a helpful tool.

KindleGen is a free program provided by Amazon that enables the creation of electronic books (eBooks) for reading on Kindle and to publish them at Amazon's eBook store. The software has been guaranteed to be functional on the Amazon Kindle store, and eBooks created with KindleGen are also exportable in various file formats to be usable on non-Kindle devices. It is a relatively simple program that may be more suited for experienced users, due to its lack of a graphical user interface, yet is operable and functional on many types of personal computers. It has been described as easy to add prose to, and also has a useful means to convert all images to GIF format, which reduces eBook file sizes.
