LEGO Mindstorms EV3

LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Home Edition is the official LEGO programming app for the MINDSTORMS EV3 robotics kit. It lets users write programs with a very simple and intuitive graphical interface: instead of typing code, you drag programming blocks for motors, sensors, loops and conditions onto a canvas and connect them into a sequence. The software is based on National Instruments LabVIEW and is simple to install. It lets users get started with LEGO MINDSTORMS quickly: the Lobby screen offers Quick Start videos, building and programming guides for the robots of the kit, More Robots and Robot Remix projects, and a Content Editor for creating your own project pages. Finished programs are downloaded to the EV3 brick over USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and the app can also update the brick firmware. It works as a good supplementary tool for anyone learning programming, whether a student or not.

The program is well suited for those looking to supplement their learning experience in programming, as it is a fun and hands-on way to learn loops, variables and sensor logic with a real robot. LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Home Edition is free and comes with an easy installation along with user guides, but it is only useful together with the EV3 brick and kit, which are sold separately.

Note that the LEGO Group retired the MINDSTORMS line in 2022, and the EV3 Home Edition software is no longer developed; its last version is 1.4.5. For current computers LEGO Education offers the Scratch-based EV3 Classroom app, while EV3 Home Edition remains useful for existing kits and for projects that were built with it.
