StarOffice

StarOffice is an office suite originally created by the German company Star Division and developed by Sun Microsystems after 1999; Oracle took it over in 2010. Version 6.0 includes a number of modules such as the word processor, spreadsheet, presentation maker, drawing program and formula editor.

• It opens and saves Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel and PowerPoint files)
• It runs on Windows, Linux and Solaris
• It uses the OpenOffice.org XML format as its native file format.
• It works with files in popular office document formats by creating or editing them with the toolset of the suite.

StarOffice offers word processing, spreadsheets and presentations compatible with Microsoft Office files in one suite.

As an alternative to the MS Office suite, StarOffice covers the same everyday office tasks. All modules share one interface, so switching between documents of different types is simple. These are the main modules:

Writer is the word processor used for editing texts, and documents can be saved in formats compatible with Microsoft Word. Calc is the spreadsheet for making calculations and is compatible with Microsoft Excel. Impress is used for making presentations and is compatible with Microsoft PowerPoint. Draw is used for vector drawings and diagrams, and Math is the formula editor. StarOffice 6.0 was based on the OpenOffice.org 1.0 code, but unlike OpenOffice.org it was sold as a commercial product. The suite is no longer developed: Oracle renamed it Oracle Open Office and discontinued it in 2011.
