ZSNES

ZSNES is a Super Nintendo (SNES / Super Famicom) emulator for the computer. It has a long history, dating all the way back to 1997, when zsKnight and _Demo_ released the first DOS version. The emulator was developed by the ZSNES Team for about ten years; the final release, version 1.51, came out in January 2007, and the program is no longer developed. Much of the code is written in x86 assembly, which made ZSNES very fast on the modest hardware of its time and turned it into one of the most popular ways to play Super Nintendo games on a PC. Today it is considered less accurate than newer emulators such as Snes9x and bsnes, but it still runs a large part of the SNES library well, for example Super Mario World.

Setting up ZSNES takes a few minutes: unpack the archive, run zsnesw.exe and load a ROM through the GAME menu of its built-in interface. ZSNES supports both SlowROM and FastROM games and reads common ROM formats such as SMC, SFC, SWC and FIG, also directly from ZIP, GZip and JMA archives. You can also record gameplay on ZSNES as ZMV movies with re-recording, chapters and subtitles, and dump the footage to AVI. Save states with a graphical preview let you save and load the game at any point. Cheat codes in Game Genie, Pro Action Replay and GoldFinger formats can be added and searched from the CHEAT menu, and IPS patches such as fan translations are applied automatically. ZSNES also emulates many SNES enhancement chips, including the SuperFX, SA-1, S-DD1, C4 and DSP-1, although some of them are only partially supported. The program supports a variety of different gaming controllers, so you don't have to have an old SNES controller in order to play; keyboard and gamepad keys are configured under CONFIG > INPUT.

ZSNES is free, open-source software released under the GNU GPL, with builds for Windows, DOS and Linux. The netplay feature of older versions was disabled in version 1.50. The original developers have since released SUPER ZSNES, a separate, completely rewritten emulator; the classic ZSNES 1.51 described here remains available from its SourceForge project page.
