Opera GX

Opera GX is a specialized browser released by Opera that is custom-designed to be beneficial for PC gamers. It is built on the same Chromium engine as the original Opera browser, but adds gaming-oriented tools and a distinct look that gamers can use to make their browsing experience better.

The first thing you'll notice and the main difference is the unique color palette of Opera GX. Instead of a bright, white background screen, GX uses a dark theme with neon accents that is reminiscent of backlit gaming keyboards. Several color themes are offered, and light, dark and automatic modes can be switched in the settings.

Opera GX greets the user with an animated logo when it starts, and it plays sound effects when you click and type. The music and audio sounds used throughout GX were created by composer Ruben Rincon and the band Berlinist, who are known for their BAFTA-nominated soundtrack to the game Gris. In 2020 the same team added dynamic background music: it becomes more intense while you are actively browsing, clicking links or typing, and calmer when you are less active. Both the sound effects and the background music can be turned off if they are distracting.

If you are comparing the original Opera browser to GX, the biggest addition is GX Control. This panel includes a RAM limiter, a CPU limiter and a network bandwidth limiter, so the browser can be kept from taking resources away from a game that is running at the same time. The Hot Tabs Killer in the same panel shows which tabs use the most memory or processor time and closes them with a click.

The whole browser system can be adjusted and customized through the "Easy Setup" menu, found in the corner on the top right-hand side. There you can play around with the colors, themes and wallpapers and adjust the background as you like. GX Mods add even more options: community-made themes, wallpapers, sounds, background music and page styles can be installed with one click.

Besides the visuals, the sidebar in GX is similar to the original Opera browser, except the in-browser apps, which are streamlined more towards gamers. Next to messengers such as Facebook Messenger, Telegram and WhatsApp, you have Twitch, Discord and a music player. Like most consoles, when you are logged into Twitch, you will receive notifications when channels you follow go live. This can also be shut off because it can get annoying.

GX Corner collects free games, game deals, a calendar of upcoming releases and gaming news in one page. Like the standard Opera, GX also includes a free built-in VPN, an ad blocker and Flow for sending links and files to a phone. Opera GX is free and is available for Windows and macOS, with mobile versions for Android and iOS.
