World of Tanks is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online war game that takes place during World War 2 and is centered around team-based combat. Players take control of historically-modeled tanks from a variety of different countries such as France, Germany, the United States, China, etc. In a typical World of Tanks gameplay match, there are 30 tanks on the map split between 2 teams for 15 tanks versus 15 tanks team showdown. The maps are extremely varied and sample a variety of different real-world locations that vary in size from extremely small urban maps to large scale desert warfare. The rendering of the tanks to ensure that they are consistent with historical models and behave similarly to their real-world counterparts is a huge point of focus for the developers. To ensure that these tanks can be historically rendered according to their movement styles and vehicle characteristics, the game divides tanks into 5 different categories ranging from light to heavy, with 2 additional tank categories for even slower yet more powerfully destructive tanks.

There are multiple game modes for players to enjoy, such as your standard options like team deathmatch and capture the flag. However, the most popular game type is known as clan wars, which is an ongoing battle that teams take place inset on a persistent online map where different clans must fight to control and hold certain territories and points of interest. In order to give players a proper sense of progression in this game, after matches, players earn credits that can be used in the online store upgrade tanks and purchase new ones. For players who do not want to invest the time in earning credits but still want to unlock some of the more rare customization options, there is an option to buy credits with real-world money to make it easier. The upgrades to tanks in this game, however, are purely cosmetic and do not give players an unfair advantage over others.
