iMesh

iMesh is a free software from iMesh, Inc. that allowed users to download music and video files on to their computers. In addition to that, it allowed other iMesh users to share their content inside of the client itself. iMesh acted as a P2P client and a media player at the exact same time. The program was first released in November 1999 and was one of the early peer-to-peer file-sharing clients. The service was shut down in June 2016, so the client no longer connects to its network.

One of the notable features of iMesh is the ability to watch YouTube videos within the client, so users could view music videos and download content from one program. The interface of the program is simple, and there is little learning curve to get the program up and running. For playlists, iMesh has DJ stations and can create a playlist automatically from the name of a song, an artist or a mood. Songs could be synchronized with an iPod or another MP3 player each time it was connected. Downloaded files stay on the computer and can be played offline. iMesh also showed the top trending songs, artists and releases. After a 2004 settlement with the RIAA, iMesh offered only licensed content, with paid subscriptions and track purchases alongside the free service. From version 6, acoustic fingerprinting filtered the shared files, so downloads were limited to a catalogue of about 15 million licensed songs and videos. Since the service was discontinued, the program works only as a player for files that were downloaded earlier.
