WLAN Optimizer

WLAN Optimizer (for Windows) is a freeware application that disables background scan activity for wireless networks. This can improve latency and eliminate periodic lag spikes in WLAN connections.

It can eliminate periodic lag spikes in wireless connections during online gaming and audio or video streaming.

WLAN Optimizer for Windows was developed to combat lag in online games. It has a small, portable interface with Status, Settings and About tabs and improves wireless connections without any installation. The tool is free; the author accepts donations via PayPal. Once the software is closed, Windows returns to its standard WLAN settings.

The tool works in the background and can start with Windows, minimized to the tray.

Originally developed for Vista, the software also works with later Windows versions up to Windows 11. The latest release is version 0.21 Alpha from 2009. Its tweaks can be combined if one alone does not help with your adapter. Disable autoconfig has a similar effect to disabling background scan, but it is not recommended because Windows then no longer shows wireless networks.

The author recommends enabling only the Disable background scan tweak and trying Enable streaming mode if that is not enough. Streaming mode tells the WLAN driver to avoid network scans and power saving while it is active. If lags are not periodic, the cause is usually a weak signal, and WLAN Optimizer cannot help.
