AbiWord

AbiWord is a free, open-source word processor similar to Microsoft Word. It is well suited to creating, editing and printing documents such as letters, reports and memos, and it opens and saves common formats including Word .doc and .docx, OpenDocument, RTF and plain text.

AbiWord is part of a larger project known as AbiSource, which was started by SourceGear Corporation. The goal was a cross-platform set of open-source office software, and the project began with AbiWord before SourceGear handed it to the community.

Its source code is written to be portable, so AbiWord runs on Linux and other Unix-like systems as well as Windows.

AbiWord provides a versatile, cross-platform solution for creating and editing documents in many languages.

AbiWord works in many languages, with spell-check dictionaries for dozens of them, and supports styles, tables, footnotes, mail merge and a plugin system that extends what the program can do.

The Windows version of AbiWord is no longer developed - the last Windows build is a 2.9 beta from 2012 - while development continues on Linux, where the current stable series is 3.0. It remains a lightweight word processor for everyday documents.
